About the Netherlands.
The Netherlands is the European country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, a low-lying state shaped by rivers, canals, polders and the North Sea. Amsterdam is the constitutional capital, while The Hague is the seat of government. The country combines dense historic cities with open water landscapes, agricultural regions, dunes, forests and the Wadden islands.

Amsterdam’s canal ring, Rijksmuseum and neighbourhood markets are only one part of the travel picture. Rotterdam brings modern architecture and a working harbour, Utrecht has medieval canals and a lively centre, and The Hague links art collections with the North Sea coast. Beyond the major cities, visitors can cycle through polders, visit windmill landscapes, explore the Hoge Veluwe and travel between historic towns by rail.
Dutch society has been shaped by Indigenous European communities, medieval trade, maritime expansion, colonialism, migration and the changes brought by industrialisation and modern urban life. Museums and historic places present both cultural achievement and the harder histories of empire, slavery and labour. Dutch is the main language, with recognised regional and community languages adding to the country’s linguistic landscape.
Schiphol is the principal international gateway, and an extensive rail network connects the main cities and many smaller centres. Cycling infrastructure is widespread, but routes, weather and seasonal demand vary across the country. Accommodation ranges from city hotels and canal houses to campsites, holiday parks and rural stays, making regional travel practical without relying on one base.
