Destination overview
About Bonaire.
Bonaire is a special municipality of the Netherlands in the southern Caribbean, centred on the harbour town of Kralendijk. The island is low, dry and surrounded by shallow coastal waters, with salt pans, mangroves, cactus scrub and a protected marine environment shaping both everyday life and travel.
Read more about Bonaire
Bonaire is particularly suited to diving and snorkelling, with reef sites accessible from the shore and boat trips to sites around the coast. Washington Slagbaai National Park covers the north-west, while the south has salt works, flamingo habitat and broad views across the Caribbean. Kralendijk provides the main concentration of accommodation, restaurants, services and historic waterfront buildings, and Rincon offers a different perspective on the island’s older settlement pattern.
The island’s history includes Indigenous Caquetío communities, Spanish and Dutch colonial rule, African heritage and the legacy of plantation and salt production. Papiamento and Dutch are central to public life, with English and Spanish also widely used. Local music, food and festivals reflect the movement of people across the Dutch Caribbean and the continuing importance of marine and land stewardship.
Flamingo International Airport is the main air gateway, with additional access by sea and regional flights. Roads around Kralendijk and the main coastal areas are easy to follow, but the national park and quieter shore sites require more planning, especially in hot and windy conditions. Visitor accommodation ranges from small hotels and apartments to dive-focused stays, with many activities organised around the sea.
