About Curaçao.
Curaçao is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, located in the southern Caribbean near the coast of Venezuela. Willemstad, the capital, curves around a natural harbour and gives the island its most recognisable urban setting. Outside the city, the landscape is dry and rolling, with cacti, bays, plantation areas and a long, varied coastline.

Willemstad’s historic districts of Punda, Otrobanda and Scharloo combine colourful waterfront buildings, museums, markets and cafés. Beyond the capital, visitors can swim and snorkel in sheltered coves, dive along the island’s reefs, visit Christoffel National Park and explore former plantation estates. Curaçao’s food scene draws on Papiamento, Dutch, African, Latin American and wider Caribbean influences, with seafood and stews alongside street snacks and bakery traditions.
Curaçao’s present culture was shaped by Indigenous Caribbean peoples, Dutch colonial rule, the transatlantic slave trade, Jewish and other migrant communities, and the island’s role in regional commerce and oil. Papiamento, Dutch and English have official status, while Spanish is widely understood. Museums, forts, historic landhouses, music and carnival provide ways to encounter these histories without reducing the island to its colonial architecture.
Curaçao International Airport is the principal gateway, and Willemstad is the base for most accommodation, services and onward road travel. A hire car is useful for reaching beaches, parks and western villages, while the capital is best explored on foot in sections. The island is relatively dry, and visitor experiences vary between the urban heritage districts, resort areas, working communities and quieter rural coast.
