About Somalia.
The Horn at the Edge of Everything
Somalia occupies the easternmost point of Africa, where the continent narrows to a dramatic point between the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. This position at the crossroads of ancient trade routes gave rise to some of the earliest merchant cities on earth, places where frankincense and myrrh were weighed against gold and silk. The landscape shifts from the coral-fringed northern coast to the flat, semi-arid plains of the interior, where acacia trees cast their sparse shade over red earth and the horizon stretches further than anywhere you have ever stood.

A Nation Told in Verse
The Somali people possess one of the world's great oral literary traditions, a culture so thoroughly expressed in poetry that the language itself evolved to carry metre and rhyme with startling efficiency. Across centuries of nomadic life, history, love, grief, and satire were all transmitted through verse. Even today, a well-turned poem can stop a room. The tradition of xeer, the customary code of mutual obligations between people, remains a living feature of Somali social life, something visitors encounter in teahouses and households alike.
Fourteen Hundred Kilometres of Coast
Somalia claims the longest coastline of any country on the African mainland, a sun-baked ribbon running from the Gulf of Aden in the north to the Kenyan border in the south. The waters are rich with fish, marine turtles, and some of the least disturbed coral formations in the western Indian Ocean. The ancient port of Berbera was a trading hub known to Roman-era merchants, while the Jubba River delta in the south draws migratory birds in extraordinary numbers to its reed-fringed wetlands.
Mogadishu Before the Postcards
The capital carries a reputation in global imagination that often overwhelms any other image of Somalia, but Mogadishu has centuries of history behind the headlines. The old quarter of Hamarweyne contains Ottoman-inflected mosques, Italian colonial arcades, and alleyways that open unexpectedly onto the sea. The city holds a battered beauty, a quality of improbable survival that travellers who reach it tend to find far more striking than they expected. It is not the Somalia of stock photographs, and that distinction is precisely the point.
