About Jubaland.
Where the Jubba Meets the Sea
Jubaland takes its name from the Jubba, one of only two rivers that flow all year in Somalia, winding down from the Ethiopian highlands to spill into the Indian Ocean. The state gathers the Gedo, Middle Juba and Lower Juba regions into a broad sweep of riverbank farmland, dry savannah and a long southern coastline. Travellers drawn here tend to find a greener, wilder Somalia than they expected, shaped by water and by trade.

Kismayo and the Bajuni Shore
Kismayo, the port at the heart of the state, sits where the Jubba nears the sea and has been a trading hub since the days of the Ajuran and Geledi sultanates. Just offshore lie the Bajuni Islands, home to a seafaring people whose Swahili speech and fishing traditions set them apart. The town itself hums with the comings and goings of a busy harbour.
River, Forest and Wildlife
The Jubba valley is among the most fertile corners of the country, long famed for its banana groves and shady riverside farms. Towards the Kenyan border the land gives way to woodland and bush, where some of Somalia's last wild forests shelter rare birds and roaming game. For the patient traveller, this is a landscape of quiet, unexpected abundance.
A Meeting of Many Peoples
Few parts of Somalia hold such a mix of communities, from Somali pastoralists and Bantu farmers of the Gosha to Bajuni fishers and Tunni townsfolk. That diversity shows up in the food, the music and the many tongues heard in a single market. Visitors who come with openness and respect are likely to be drawn into the warmth of local hospitality.
