Dhusamareb and the Inland Towns

Dhusamareb, the administrative capital, rises from the central plateau as a growing seat of universities and government. To the south and west, towns such as Adado, Guriel and Abudwak gather traders, pastoralists and students into busy weekly markets. The divided city of Galkayo, shared with neighbouring Puntland, hums as a commercial crossroads linking the north and south of the country.

A Quiet Stretch of Indian Ocean

Along its eastern edge, Galmudug opens onto the Indian Ocean, where the old port town of Hobyo recalls the days of the coastal sultanates. The shoreline here is sparse and elemental, with long beaches, fishing skiffs and the occasional dune giving way to the surf. For those who appreciate solitude, the coast offers a rare sense of space.

Camels, Incense and Hospitality

Life in Galmudug moves to the rhythm of livestock, and herds of camels and goats remain central to both livelihood and pride. The town of El Buur is known for the dabqaad, a hand carved incense burner that perfumes homes with frankincense and myrrh. Guests are welcomed warmly, usually with sweet tea and generous plates of rice, and a little curiosity tends to go a long way here.
