About Hirshabelle.
Land of the Shabelle River
Hirshabelle takes its name and its character from the Shabelle River, which winds through the heart of the state on its long journey from the Ethiopian highlands. Formed from the union of the Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle regions, this is some of the most fertile country in Somalia, where riverside farms yield bananas, sugar cane and grain. Travellers who follow the water tend to find a green ribbon of life threading through the wider plains.

Jowhar, the Jewel on the River
Jowhar, whose name means jewel, serves as the state capital and sits among irrigated fields about ninety kilometres north of Mogadishu. The town carries the memory of a once thriving sugar industry and remains a centre of farming and trade. Its riverside setting and bustling market give it an easygoing, working rhythm that rewards an unhurried visit.
Beledweyne and the Inland North
Upriver in Hiiraan, Beledweyne spreads across both banks of the Shabelle near the Ethiopian border, a lively crossroads for trade moving between the coast and the interior. The surrounding countryside shifts from riverine greenery to open savannah grazed by camels and cattle. It is a place where the daily commerce of central Somalia plays out in full.
Coast, Cuisine and Welcome
Where the land meets the Indian Ocean, the old port of Adale opens Hirshabelle to the sea, with quiet beaches and fishing communities along the shore. Meals here lean on the river's harvests and fresh catch from the sea, often shared over generous helpings of rice and sweet tea. Visitors who come with patience and respect for local custom are likely to be met with genuine warmth.
