About South West.
The Fertile Heartland
South West State spreads across the fertile country between the Jubba and Shabelle rivers, taking in the Bay, Bakool and Lower Shabelle regions. This is the homeland of the Rahanweyn, the agro pastoral Digil and Mirifle people whose farms of sorghum and herds of camels have shaped the land for centuries. Travellers who venture inland tend to find rolling farmland, busy livestock markets and a way of life rooted deeply in the soil.

Baidoa, City of the Bay
Baidoa, known locally as Baydhabo, is the largest city and the lively heart of the state. Long a crossroads of caravan trade, it sits among grazing highlands where springs once drew merchants and farmers from far afield. On the city's outskirts at Buur Heybe, ancient rock art hints at human stories reaching back thousands of years.
The Brava Coast
Down on the Indian Ocean, the old town of Barawe carries a distinctive coastal heritage, with whitewashed stone houses and a seafaring tradition stretching back to the medieval Swahili world. Its beaches are broad and uncrowded, washed by warm water and lined with palms. The shore here moves to the slower rhythm of fishing boats and ocean breezes.
A Language and a Welcome of Its Own
This region gives Somalia much of its linguistic colour, for the Maay tongue of the Rahanweyn rings out in markets and homes across Bay and Bakool. Meals lean on sorghum, maize, sesame and fresh produce from the riverlands, often shared with the easy generosity for which the area is known. Visitors who arrive with curiosity and respect are likely to be welcomed as honoured guests.
