About Sudurpashchim.
Nepal's far west, where the country meets Uttarakhand
Sudurpashchim Province occupies the far western corner of Nepal, bounded by the Mahakali River and the Indian state of Uttarakhand to the west, Tibet to the north, and the broad alluvial plains of Uttar Pradesh to the south. Its nine districts range from the elephant-grass flatlands of Kailali and Kanchanpur in the Terai, where Shuklaphanta National Park protects one of Asia's largest remaining swamp deer herds, to the glaciated high Himalaya of Darchula and Bajhang, where Api (7,132 m) and Saipal (7,031 m) rise above valleys that have sustained trade routes between Nepal and Tibet for centuries. In between lies a hilly middle country of terraced farms, ancient temples, and a Doteli-speaking culture with its own literary tradition, music, and festival calendar distinct from anything in the rest of Nepal.

Shuklaphanta and the wildlife of the western Terai
Shuklaphanta National Park in Kanchanpur District is the least-visited of Nepal's three major Terai wildlife parks and arguably the most rewarding. Its open grasslands, created and maintained by decades of elephant activity, support the largest concentration of swamp deer in the world alongside Bengal tigers, leopards, sloth bears, and an extraordinary abundance of birdlife. The Shuklaphanta depression, a seasonal lake that draws thousands of waterbirds in winter, is one of the finest wetland birdwatching sites in South Asia. Morning and evening game drives here feel genuinely private in a way that has become difficult to achieve in Chitwan and Bardiya. The Ghodaghodi Lake complex nearby, a Ramsar wetsite of a dozen interconnected lakes, adds another dimension of wetland habitat to what is already the most biodiverse corner of the province.
Khaptad National Park and the plateau at the centre of everything
At the heart of the province, straddling Bajhang, Bajura, Doti, and Achham districts, Khaptad National Park protects a high plateau at around three thousand metres, a meadowland of unusual botanical richness draped over a landscape that Swami Khaptad, a revered Hindu ascetic, inhabited as a hermitage for decades in the twentieth century. The plateau's combination of open grassland, birch and rhododendron forest, and a network of lakes and streams makes it one of the most serene trekking environments in Nepal, reached by trails from Chainpur or by small aircraft to Sanfebagar. The Badimalika temple complex to the east, one of the most important Hindu shrines in far-western Nepal, draws pilgrims on foot over mountain passes at the peak of its festival season.
Dhangadhi and the character of the far west
Dhangadhi, the province's temporary capital and largest city, sits in the Terai close to the Indian border and carries the slightly frontier energy of a city that knows it is the last major stop before the plains of Uttar Pradesh. It is a working city with good connections to Kathmandu by air and a lively enough commercial scene to serve as a base for the surrounding wildlife parks and hill districts. Mahendranagar to the west, on the Mahakali River, retains an older border-town character and a riparian setting that rewards an afternoon walk along the riverbank, looking across to Uttarakhand. The Tharu communities of the Terai belt practise a culture of exceptional visual richness, with mural paintings, cane and bamboo craft, and the Stick Dance performed at the Maghi festival that marks the Tharu new year.
