About Bagmati.
Nepal's capital and the valley that shaped a civilisation
Bagmati Province holds the Kathmandu Valley, and the Kathmandu Valley holds the thread of everything Nepalese civilisation has produced over two thousand years. Seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites crowd within a morning's drive of each other: the cremation ghats of Pashupatinath where the Bagmati River collects its sacred dead, the gilded rooftops of the three Durbar Squares, the Buddhist stupas of Boudhanath and Swayambhunath rising from the valley fog, the medieval walled city of Bhaktapur, and the palaces of Patan. The Newars who built this valley culture left behind a density of architecture, art, and religious practice with few equivalents anywhere in Asia. Even after a devastating earthquake in 2015, reconstruction has returned many of the lost spires and courtyards to something close to their original form.

Mountains above, jungle below
Bagmati Province stretches from the Tibetan border down to the subtropical plains, spanning an elevation range that takes it from permanent glaciers on the Ganesh Himal to the sal forests of Chitwan. Chitwan National Park, the country's oldest and most accessible wildlife reserve, puts visitors within reach of greater one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tigers, gharials, and an extraordinary profusion of birdlife from open-topped jeeps or dugout canoes along the Rapti River. North of the valley, the Langtang and Helambu regions offer trekking through Tamang villages with a cultural and ecological richness that crowds have not yet overwhelmed, while the Rolwaling valley on the eastern fringe attracts serious climbers seeking passes that link to the Khumbu.
Kathmandu: a city running on many frequencies at once
Kathmandu itself is a city that resists easy characterisation. Thamel's tourist infrastructure sits minutes from neighbourhoods where butter lamps are still lit at dawn in front of household shrines, and where the festival calendar packs the streets with processions that have no separation between the sacred and the spectacular. Indra Jatra, Bisket Jatra, the living goddess Kumari paraded through the old city, Tihar's night of oil lamps lighting every windowsill: the city runs on a ritual clock that makes conventional sightseeing feel like the wrong tool entirely. The food scene has expanded dramatically, and the city now sustains a range of cooking that extends well beyond the classic dal bhat, though the dal bhat at a good local house remains the most quietly satisfying meal in the valley.
The provincial capital and the quieter corners
Hetauda, the provincial capital south of the valley, is a workaday industrial town that serves as a junction between the hills and the Terai, mostly bypassed by tourists in a hurry. That is reason enough to stop. The Chepang communities of the surrounding Makwanpur hills follow some of the oldest subsistence patterns in Nepal; the Tamang villages of Nuwakot and Rasuwa preserve a Buddhist folk tradition distinct from both the high Himalayan Sherpa culture and the valley's syncretic Newar form. Sindhuli, Ramechhap, and Dolakha to the east remain genuinely off the circuit, connected by roads that have only been sealed in recent years and rewarding those who make the effort with landscapes and hospitality that feel like Nepal a generation ago.
