About Yap.
Stone Money and Ancient Empires
Yap is one of the Pacific's most compelling destinations, a state of the Federated States of Micronesia where enormous limestone discs called rai stones still serve as a form of currency and cultural currency alike. The main islands — Yap Proper, Gagil-Tamil, Maap and Rumung — cluster together within a coral reef, while 78 outer islands and atolls stretch eastward for nearly 600 kilometres. This was once the centre of the Yapese Empire, whose influence reached across the western Pacific and whose traditions survive with remarkable vitality today.

World-Class Diving in Warm, Clear Waters
Yap has earned a global reputation among divers for its resident population of manta rays, which gather year-round in channels off the main island. Winding through coral-walled passages with mantas gliding overhead is a signature experience here, and the relatively small number of visitors means the reefs remain in exceptional health. Nudibranchs, sharks, turtles and a dense range of reef fish populate sites that are accessible by boat from Colonia, the state capital on the east coast of Yap Island.
Living Culture in the Caroline Islands
Yap's traditional culture is among the most intact in Micronesia. Villages maintain distinct caste systems, and the elaborate stone platforms of men's houses stand alongside thatched buildings where customs around dance, weaving and navigation are still actively practised. Visitors who approach with respect can witness traditional dances and meet artisans creating the intricate lava-lava and thu cloth garments that define Yapese identity. The outer islands, reachable by small plane or boat, offer even more remote encounters with communities whose connection to traditional seafaring remains central to daily life.
Getting There and Getting Around
Yap International Airport in Colonia receives regular flights from Guam, making it straightforward to reach from other parts of Micronesia and beyond. The compact main island cluster is easy to navigate by car or bicycle, and local guides can arrange boat trips to outer island communities. Colonia has a small selection of hotels, dive operators and restaurants serving both Micronesian and international food. As a destination in free association with the United States, US dollars are accepted everywhere and American travellers need no visa.
