About the Federated States of Micronesia.
Four Islands, One Federation
Scattered across three million square kilometres of the western Pacific, the Federated States of Micronesia is made up of four distinct island states: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae. Each one carries its own language, culture, and landscape, from Yap's ancient stone money and living traditions to the jungle-draped volcanic peaks of Kosrae. The federation may be small in landmass, but its reach across the ocean is extraordinary.

Wrecks, Reefs, and Ruins
Chuuk Lagoon is one of the world's great wreck diving destinations, its turquoise waters sheltering the ghostly remains of a Japanese Imperial fleet sunk during World War II. Pohnpei draws visitors to the enigmatic stone city of Nan Madol, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built on artificial islets over a thousand years ago. Above the water and below it, the FSM rewards the curious and the adventurous in equal measure.
A Pacific Life, Unhurried
Life across the FSM moves at the pace of tides and trade winds. Villages remain close-knit, hospitality is deeply embedded in local culture, and the ocean underpins everything from diet to ceremony. Pohnpei's sakau ceremonies, Yap's traditional navigation traditions, and the outer island communities reachable only by boat or small plane offer a window into a Pacific world that has changed far less than most.
Getting There and Getting Around
United Airlines' Island Hopper route connects the FSM to Honolulu and Guam, touching down at Pohnpei, Chuuk, and Kosrae along the way. Yap is served via connections through Guam. Inter-island travel beyond the main hubs relies on small aircraft and occasional shipping vessels. The WānaTravel guides to each state cover transport, entry requirements, and what to see in detail.
