About Kosrae.
The Sleeping Lady of the Pacific
Rising from the western Pacific in a silhouette so striking that sailors once called it the Sleeping Lady, Kosrae is the easternmost and most secluded of the Federated States of Micronesia's four island states. Its rugged volcanic peaks, blanketed in dense rainforest and ringed by an almost-intact fringing reef, make it one of the least-visited and best-preserved islands in all of Micronesia. This is a place where the reef has never been blasted for harbour access, where village life moves at the pace of the tides, and where a visitor can feel genuinely off the beaten track.

World-Class Diving in Pristine Waters
Kosrae's reef is widely regarded among divers as one of the healthiest in the Pacific. The waters teem with soft corals, sea fans, and schools of pelagic fish, while WWII wrecks rest on sandy slopes at diveable depths. The Lelu ruins, a vast basalt city built between 1250 and 1850, can be explored both by land and from the water, offering a rare combination of natural and archaeological wonder. Surfers, snorkellers, and kayakers will also find the lagoon system richly rewarding.
Trails, Waterfalls, and Mangrove Paddling
Inland, a network of hiking trails winds up through jungle to dramatic waterfalls and panoramic ridgelines. Mount Finkol, the island's highest point at 634 metres, rewards those who make the climb with views stretching across the entire island and far out to sea. The mangrove forests that fringe Kosrae's southern coast are a natural kayaking playground, sheltering kingfishers, herons, and juvenile reef fish in a labyrinth of channels that can occupy an entire morning.
A Quiet Island That Rewards the Curious Traveller
Kosrae has no mass tourism, no resort strip, and no crowds. What it does have is warmth, cohesive communities, and the kind of unhurried hospitality that is increasingly rare in the Pacific. The island's small network of guesthouses sits close to the action, and getting around by hired car or bicycle is genuinely easy. WānaTravel's video coverage of Kosrae captures just how unexpectedly beautiful this forgotten corner of Micronesia really is.
