Where the Alps Take Centre Stage
Roughly two thirds of Austria tilts upward into the Eastern Alps, so a great deal of the country comes with a view attached. Glacier-fed valleys, cable cars and high meadows stitch the landscape together, and a train ride across it tends to feel like scrolling through a postcard collection. Even the lower-lying east, where the land flattens towards Hungary, keeps a vineyard or a gentle hill close at hand.

Vienna Keeps Good Time
The capital wears its imperial past comfortably, with Habsburg palaces, gilded concert halls and a coffee house culture that treats lingering as a civic duty. Composers from Mozart to Strauss left their fingerprints all over the city, and the music still spills out of opera houses and street corners alike. Pair a slice of cake with an afternoon of gallery-hopping and you have the Viennese formula more or less solved.
Lakes, Villages and Mountain Air
Beyond the cities, the Salzkammergut scatters mirror-bright lakes between steep green slopes, while villages like Hallstatt cling photogenically to the waterline. Salzburg adds baroque grandeur and a fondness for its most famous musical son, and the Tyrol delivers chalets, cowbells and walking trails by the dozen. It is the kind of scenery that rewards an unhurried itinerary.
A Country for All Seasons
Winter turns the western valleys into a playground of ski runs and snug mountain huts, with thermal spas waiting for anyone who would rather soak than schuss. Come summer, the same slopes trade skis for hiking boots, and lake towns fill with swimmers and sun-seekers. Spring and autumn bring quieter trails, wine harvests and a softer light, so there is rarely a wrong moment to visit.
