About Salzburg.
City of Mozart and Music
Few places pack as much fame into one skyline as the city of Salzburg, capital of this alpine state and birthplace of Mozart. Baroque domes and the mighty Festung Hohensalzburg rise above a tangle of medieval lanes, while the annual Salzburg Festival draws music lovers from around the world each summer. Beyond the famous old town, the state unfolds into some of the loveliest mountain country in Austria.

Lakes, Meadows and Movie Scenery
North and east of the city lies the Salzkammergut, a dreamy realm of mirror still lakes ringed by green hills. The Wolfgangsee and Fuschlsee tempt swimmers and sailors in summer, and the rolling meadows here played a starring role in The Sound of Music. It is gentle, postcard country, perfect for slow boat rides, lakeside walks and lingering coffee with a mountain view.
High Peaks and Plunging Waterfalls
The south rears up into the Hohe Tauern, the largest national park in the Alps, crowned by the glittering Großglockner. The thundering Krimml Waterfalls tumble in three great tiers, among the tallest in Europe, while the Großglockner High Alpine Road twists past glaciers and marmots toward the summits. Castles like Hohenwerfen and the icy caverns of the Eisriesenwelt add a touch of fairytale drama.
Slopes for Every Season
When snow falls, Salzburg becomes one big playground for skiers. Resorts such as Saalbach Hinterglemm, Zell am See and Obertauern fill with visitors chasing fresh powder and sunny terraces. In the warmer months the same valleys turn to hiking, cycling and rafting, and the spa towns of the Gastein valley invite weary travellers to soak in warm mineral springs. Whatever the season, there is room to roam.
