About Ras Al Khaimah.
Seven Thousand Years at the Top of the UAE
Ras Al Khaimah sits at the northernmost tip of the UAE, where the Hajar Mountains crowd down to the coast and the Arabian Gulf narrows toward the Strait of Hormuz. Human beings have been living here continuously for at least seven thousand years, and the archaeological evidence is everywhere: Bronze Age tombs at Shimal, the ruins of the medieval port city of Julfar that once anchored Indian Ocean trade routes, and a string of Portuguese-era forts that mark the moment European ships arrived and found a prosperous coast already well in the habit of looking after itself. The Ras Al Khaimah National Museum, housed in a former palace of the ruling Al Qasimi family, organises this deep history into a coherent story that rewards an afternoon.

Mountains Built for Adventure
The Hajar range rises directly behind the city, and the emirate has leaned into its terrain more deliberately than any other in the federation. Jebel Jais, the highest peak in the UAE at 1,934 metres, is reached by a well-maintained mountain road and rewards visitors with views stretching into Oman. At its summit, the world's longest zip line stretches 2.83 kilometres across a valley and delivers riders to a lower station in under three minutes of pure velocity. Lower on the mountain, via ferrata routes have been bolted into the rock face for those who prefer a slower engagement with the altitude. The wadi networks below are equally rewarding on foot, and the cooler temperatures at elevation make hiking viable even outside the winter months.
A Coast That Is Quietly Changing
Sixty-eight kilometres of Gulf coastline have made Ras Al Khaimah a destination for beach resorts since before the other emirates arrived at the same idea. Al Marjan Island, a set of artificial coral-shaped peninsulas extending into the Gulf, has become the focal point of the emirate's tourism expansion, with a pipeline of hotels and the forthcoming Wynn Al Marjan Island integrated resort reshaping what the northern coast offers. Away from the development, the beaches at Al Hamra and along the mainland shore remain among the calmest in the UAE, the water shallow and warm, and the density of visitors a fraction of what you find further south. Mangroves line the creek that divides the old town from the Al Nakheel district, and small boats still work the fishing grounds within sight of the city.
The UAE at Its Own Speed
Ras Al Khaimah operates at a register that feels noticeably different from Dubai or Abu Dhabi. The old souks in the city centre sell pottery, spices, and gold to a local clientele as much as to visitors. The date farms around Digdaga produce fruit that ends up on tables across the country. Camels are raced at the track near the coast in winter, and falconry remains a living practice rather than a heritage display. The emirate's ceramics tradition, rooted in the clay-rich wadis of the interior, continues at workshops that have been making the same forms for generations. For travellers who want the UAE in full but at something closer to a walking pace, Ras Al Khaimah makes a compelling case.
