About Fujairah.
The Emirate That Faces East
Every other emirate opens onto the Arabian Gulf. Fujairah turns its back on all of that and faces the Gulf of Oman instead, making it the only emirate in the federation with a coastline on the Indian Ocean side of the Arabian Peninsula. The Hajar Mountains divide it from the rest of the UAE, a rugged spine of rock that kept Fujairah relatively isolated until modern highways punched through the passes. That isolation preserved something rare in the UAE: a pace of life that feels genuinely unhurried, a coastline without skyscrapers crowding the shore, and a landscape where wadis carry seasonal water down from the peaks to palm groves and fishing villages that have been here for centuries.

Mountains, Wadis, and Ancient Forts
The Hajar range is not a backdrop here; it is the main event. Hiking trails wind through Wadi Wurayah, a national park where a waterfall drops into a natural pool surrounded by frankincense trees and the calls of endemic bird species. At Ain Al Madhab, mineral springs fill pools beside gardens shaded by palms. The Fujairah Fort, one of the oldest in the UAE, sits on a rocky outcrop above Fujairah City and has watched over the surrounding plain since at least the seventeenth century. Al Bidiyah Mosque, a cluster of four domes rising from a hillside north of Fujairah City, is the oldest surviving mosque in the UAE, believed to date to the fifteenth century, and remains in use today.
A Coast Built for the Sea
Fujairah's seventy kilometres of Gulf of Oman shoreline draw divers and snorkellers from across the region. The rocky headlands around Dibba Al Fujairah in the north support some of the best coral and marine life in the Arabian Sea, with seahorses, rays, and whale sharks recorded in these waters. Sandy beaches run south from Al Aqah through Khor Fakkan to Fujairah City itself, and the relative lack of development means you can find stretches where the only company is the sound of the surf and the distant silhouette of container ships heading for the Port of Fujairah, one of the world's great bunkering hubs and the UAE's only direct gateway to the Indian Ocean without passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Cool Breezes and Grilled Fish
Fujairah's climate runs a degree or two cooler than Dubai's, and the mountains catch enough moisture to keep the valleys surprisingly green. Weekend visitors from across the UAE come here specifically to escape the heat, walking the wadis in the morning and eating freshly caught hammour and kingfish at waterfront restaurants in the afternoon. The Dibba fish market fills before sunrise with the catch brought in by small boats overnight. Inland, the oasis town of Masafi sits at a mountain crossroads and has given its name to the spring water that flows from the Hajar range and appears on tables across the entire country. Fujairah is quiet in a way that rewards those who slow down enough to notice it.
