About the United Arab Emirates.
Where the Desert Meets the Sky
Seven emirates stitched together along the southern shore of the Arabian Gulf, the United Arab Emirates is a place where sand dunes roll to the edge of cities that seem to have arrived from the future. The federation is young by any measure — formed in 1971 — yet it carries the weight of ancient trade routes, pearl-diving traditions, and Bedouin hospitality that no amount of steel and glass has managed to dislodge. Falconry is still practised with genuine reverence, and the call to prayer still sets the rhythm of the day regardless of what else is happening on the skyline.

An Unlikely Crossroads
For centuries, this coastline was a waypoint for traders moving between India, Persia, and East Africa, and that instinct for exchange never really left. Today the UAE is home to people from well over a hundred countries, giving it a cosmopolitan energy that sits in fascinating tension with its Gulf identity. The souks of Deira smell of oud and spice, dhows still ferry goods across the Creek, and somewhere nearby a rooftop infinity pool reflects the lights of a tower that did not exist ten years ago.
Beyond the Postcard
Push past Dubai and Abu Dhabi and the federation reveals quieter textures. Fujairah faces the Indian Ocean rather than the Gulf, its coastline backed by the dramatic Hajar Mountains and dotted with Portuguese-era forts. Ras Al Khaimah offers archaeological sites that predate Islam by millennia. Sharjah has staked its identity on culture and museums with a seriousness that surprises visitors who expected only spectacle. Each emirate governs itself with enough independence to feel like a distinct destination.
Light, Heat, and Hospitality
The sun here is not subtle. From May through September it arrives with an intensity that empties outdoor spaces by mid-morning and turns the evening into the real social hour. Winter, by contrast, is luminous — warm enough for the beach, cool enough for a walk through an old neighbourhood without dissolving. Ramadan transforms the cities again, slowing the daytime pace to something almost meditative before the nights erupt into long communal meals and a generosity of spirit that visitors rarely forget.
