About Iowa.
The Heart of the Heartland
Iowa sits at the geographic and agricultural centre of the United States, a state of extraordinary quiet beauty where the land rolls in long, golden waves from one horizon to the other. More than just a place people drive through, Iowa rewards those who slow down with genuinely warm communities, a surprisingly sophisticated arts scene, and a food culture that has quietly earned national attention. The wide skies here feel like something you cannot get anywhere else.

Des Moines and the University Towns
Des Moines has transformed into a genuinely exciting city, with a world-class farmers market, a thriving gallery district along East Village, and a restaurant scene that punches well above the state's size. Iowa City, home to the University of Iowa, is one of only a handful of places in the world designated a UNESCO City of Literature, and it carries that title with a vibrant independent bookshop culture and a literary calendar that draws writers from around the globe. Ames brings its own university energy and a lively craft brewing community.
The Iowa State Fair and Seasonal Celebrations
The Iowa State Fair is not just an agricultural show; it is a full-scale American cultural experience that draws over a million visitors each August. Butter sculptures, livestock competitions, and an enormous variety of food on sticks are just the beginning. Beyond the fair, Iowa's calendar fills with small-town festivals celebrating Czech heritage, blues music, and river culture along the Mississippi. The Loess Hills, a rare geological formation found only in Iowa and China, offer spectacular hiking and autumn colour that stops seasoned travellers in their tracks.
Bridges, Prairies, and the Mississippi
The covered bridges of Madison County, made famous well beyond their county lines, are a genuinely lovely way to spend an afternoon cycling through rolling farmland. The eastern edge of Iowa traces the full length of the Mississippi River, offering river towns full of Victorian architecture, steamboat history, and remarkable birdwatching along the flyway. Effigy Mounds National Monument preserves ancient Indigenous earthworks overlooking the river bluffs, a haunting and beautiful place that provides real depth to any Iowa visit.
