Basseterre and beyond

The capital Basseterre sits on the southwest coast, a port town with Georgian architecture, the distinctive Circus clock tower and a waterfront that fills with colour when carnival season arrives. Beyond the capital, the island unwinds through fishing villages, old plantation ruins and quiet parishes where the pace slows to a crawl. Sandy Point Town, once the busiest anchorage in the region, now watches the world go by from its spot on the leeward coast.

Fortresses and the sugar story

Brimstone Hill Fortress sits on a volcanic outcrop above the sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by enslaved Africans over more than a century of British colonial rule. The old sugar railway has been reimagined as a scenic train ride that loops around the island, rolling past abandoned estates and along the coast. Wingfield Estate, Romney Manor and the petroglyphs at Bloody Point add further layers to an island whose history runs deep and complicated.

Sand and warm water

The Caribbean side of Saint Kitts offers calm, sheltered bays with views across the channel to Nevis, while the Atlantic coast is rougher and wilder. Cockleshell Bay and South Frigate Bay sit on the narrow southeast peninsula, where you can glimpse both coastlines at once. The water stays warm throughout the year, the beach bars are wonderfully unfussy and there is almost always a pelican keeping watch from a nearby post.
