Charlestown and Heritage

The capital, Charlestown, is a compact port town of Georgian stone buildings, pastel cottages and iron balconies. The Alexander Hamilton Birthplace Museum marks where one of America's founding fathers entered the world, while the Jewish Cemetery is among the oldest in the Caribbean. Bath Hotel, opened in 1778, was one of the first hotels built specifically for tourism in the region and still sits beside natural hot springs. A short walk through town covers three centuries of architecture without breaking a sweat.

Food, Festivals and Island Life

Culturama, the island's own summer festival, fills the streets with masquerade dancers, calypso competitions and iron band music each July and August. Throughout the year, roadside vendors sell grilled lobster, saltfish patties and coconut water straight from the shell. Local rum shops double as neighbourhood living rooms, where dominos slap wooden tables well into the evening. The farming tradition on Nevis means fresh mangoes, soursop and passionfruit turn up at nearly every meal.

Reefs, Ruins and Trails

Hiking trails crisscross the slopes of Nevis Peak through montane forest, and guided walks reveal remnants of sugar plantation ruins being slowly reclaimed by tropical greenery. The coral reefs off the southeastern coast draw snorkellers to shallow, clear water, while the deeper sites around the Narrows strait are popular with divers. A handful of plantation inns, converted from great houses that have stood for centuries, offer a distinctly Nevisian style of hospitality that feels worlds away from the larger resort islands nearby.
