Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland is the largest urban centre and the main international gateway, with harbour neighbourhoods, volcanic cones and a highly diverse food scene. Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington combines the national capital, waterfront, museums and compact creative districts. Ōtautahi Christchurch is a useful base for Canterbury and the Southern Alps, while Tāhuna Queenstown connects lakes, ski fields and adventure activities. Smaller centres such as Rotorua, Nelson, Dunedin and Napier each make strong bases for regional trips, and ferries link the North and South Islands across Cook Strait.

Seasons are opposite to those in the northern hemisphere, and conditions can shift sharply around mountains and coasts. Domestic flights cover long distances, but driving gives access to rural landscapes and small towns; motorists should allow time, keep left and check weather and road conditions. English, te reo Māori and New Zealand Sign Language are official languages. Rainbow communities are visible in the largest cities and national law recognises same-sex marriage and broad anti-discrimination protections, although practical experiences still vary by setting.
