Destination overview
About Western Australia.
Western Australia occupies roughly the western third of the continent, extending from the tropical Kimberley through deserts and a long Indian Ocean coast to the forests and vineyards of the south-west. Perth or Boorloo is the main gateway and a relaxed river city, but the state’s defining feature is scale. Reefs, ranges, gorges and small towns can be separated by days of travel, and several regions feel like complete destinations in their own right. The reward is an unusual sense of space alongside landscapes ranging from coral coast and karri forest to red-rock country and tropical waterfalls.

Nyinggulu or Ningaloo Reef runs close to shore along the Coral Coast, allowing marine experiences from beaches as well as boats, while Shark Bay combines seagrass ecosystems, stromatolites and striking peninsulas. In the north, Purnululu’s striped domes and the Kimberley’s gorges, rivers and remote coast demand more time and planning. The south-west brings Margaret River’s food and wine, surf coast, tall karri forests and seasonal wildflowers. Perth adds Kings Park, beaches, galleries and Fremantle or Walyalup, while Wadjemup or Rottnest Island provides a car-free island visit with significant natural and cultural history.
Aboriginal peoples have maintained cultures and connections across Western Australia for tens of thousands of years, from Noongar Country in the south-west to many Kimberley, Pilbara, desert and coastal nations. European maritime contact preceded the British Swan River Colony, after which dispossession, frontier violence, pearling, pastoralism and mining transformed communities and landscapes. Aboriginal art centres, ranger programmes and cultural tours now provide locally led ways to understand Country, while Asian migration, port histories and successive resource booms have also shaped towns and Perth. The state’s cultural story therefore changes markedly between regions and should not be reduced to an outback theme.
Perth Airport connects internationally and with regional centres, and flying is often the practical way to cover the greatest distances. Transperth trains, buses and ferries serve the capital, while highways support long self-drive routes along the coast and into the interior. Some Kimberley and remote-park journeys require four-wheel drive, permits or seasonal road access, and fuel and water stops must be planned. Accommodation is broad in Perth, Margaret River, Broome and established coastal hubs but limited elsewhere. Tropical dry and wet seasons govern northern access, while the south-west has cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers, so one statewide itinerary rarely suits every region.
