About the Australian Capital Territory.
The Australian Capital Territory is a compact inland jurisdiction surrounded by New South Wales, with Canberra at its centre and the Brindabella Ranges rising to the west. Canberra was planned as the national capital, so Parliament House, diplomatic precincts and major cultural institutions sit among broad parklands and the shores of Lake Burley Griffin. Yet the territory is not only a government district. Its neighbourhoods, university life, food scene, vineyards and extensive reserves give it the character of a small city-region, where national stories and nearby bush landscapes can be explored within the same stay.

The National Gallery, National Museum, Australian War Memorial, National Portrait Gallery and Parliament House form a strong cultural circuit around the lake and Parliamentary Triangle. Beyond the formal institutions, Braddon and NewActon bring restaurants, independent shops and contemporary design, while the National Arboretum and Mount Ainslie provide wide views over the planned city. Namadgi National Park and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve lead into mountain, forest and granite country, with walking, wildlife and Aboriginal cultural places. The territory’s manageable scale makes it possible to combine a museum morning, lakeside ride and reserve visit without treating them as separate trips.
The ACT is on Ngunnawal Country, and the region’s Aboriginal history and living culture long predate the national capital. European pastoral settlement altered the landscape from the nineteenth century, before federation prompted the search for a permanent seat of government between Sydney and Melbourne. Canberra was selected and developed through a planned design associated with Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin, then expanded as Commonwealth institutions and suburbs grew. Today the territory’s identity combines Ngunnawal connections to Country, the stories held in national collections, and a local community shaped by public service, education, migration and regional links.
Canberra Airport is the principal air gateway, while road and coach links connect the territory with Sydney and regional New South Wales and a rail service reaches Canberra from Sydney. Within the city, Transport Canberra buses and light rail serve major centres, and a broad network of shared paths supports walking and cycling. A car or organised tour is useful for Namadgi, Tidbinbilla and dispersed wineries. Accommodation ranges from central hotels and serviced apartments to caravan parks and rural stays. Distinct seasons change the experience, with crisp winters, colourful autumns and warm summers, but volatile event schedules and weather should be checked separately when planning.
