Destination overview
About Victoria.
Victoria is Australia’s smallest mainland state, but it compresses a striking range of landscapes around Melbourne and a network of regional cities. The capital’s trams, laneways, markets, galleries, live music and major sporting grounds create a dense urban experience, while beaches, vineyards, forests, alpine country and western volcanic plains lie within a few hours. This makes Victoria especially suited to journeys that combine city neighbourhoods with a regional loop. Its identity is not only Melbourne’s, however: Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and smaller coastal and country communities carry distinct histories, industries and creative cultures.

The Great Ocean Road follows surf coast, rainforest and limestone cliffs towards the Shipwreck Coast, while Gariwerd or the Grampians offers sandstone ranges, walking and major Aboriginal rock-art places. The Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula combine food, wine and rural scenery near Melbourne, and Phillip Island is known for wildlife viewing managed around sensitive colonies. Farther east, Wilsons Promontory and Gippsland bring beaches, forest and wetlands, while the High Country supports alpine walking and winter snow. In Melbourne, the National Gallery of Victoria, neighbourhood dining, Queen Victoria Market and sporting events offer many ways into the city beyond its centre.
The lands now called Victoria are Country for many Aboriginal peoples, including the Kulin Nations around Port Phillip, whose cultures and responsibilities remain alive despite dispossession and frontier violence. British settlement expanded rapidly from the 1830s, and the gold rushes of the 1850s drew migrants, wealth and infrastructure that reshaped Melbourne and inland towns. Later migration from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East deepened the state’s food, faith, arts and neighbourhood traditions. Cultural centres, galleries and Traditional Owner-led tours connect these layers, while regional heritage also reflects farming, industry, labour movements and environmental change.
Melbourne Airport is the main international and domestic gateway, with Avalon serving selected routes near Geelong. Melbourne’s tram, train and bus networks make much of the metropolitan area accessible without a car, and V/Line trains and coaches connect many regional centres. Self-driving remains useful for national parks, the Great Ocean Road and dispersed food and wine regions. Accommodation is extensive in Melbourne and established tourism towns, then thinner in remote park areas. Weather can change quickly, alpine roads need seasonal preparation, and coastal or mountain driving may take longer than distance suggests, so a regional itinerary benefits from fewer bases and more time between them.
