About Tasmania.
Tasmania is an island state south of mainland Australia, where compact distances connect Hobart and Launceston with glaciated mountains, temperate rainforest, farmland and long, exposed coasts. The Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area protects a vast cultural and natural landscape across much of the west and south-west, while the east offers granite headlands and sheltered bays. The island’s appeal comes from the closeness of wild places to small cities and towns: a journey can move from galleries and historic streets to alpine walking, beaches or producer-led food experiences within a single region.

Cradle Mountain and Lake St Clair provide well-known entrances to the World Heritage wilderness, with day walks and longer routes through rainforest, moorland and alpine country. Freycinet’s granite peaks and bays, the larapuna or Bay of Fires coast, Bruny Island and the Tasman Peninsula show different coastal landscapes and wildlife. Hobart’s waterfront, Salamanca and museums contrast with Launceston’s river gorge and northern food country, while the Museum of Old and New Art adds a contemporary cultural landmark. Markets, cider, cool-climate wine, seafood and farm visits work best as part of a regional journey rather than a checklist.
Tasmanian Aboriginal people have lived in and actively managed this island for more than 40,000 years, and palawa culture, community and connections to Country continue today. British invasion brought frontier violence, dispossession and attempted cultural destruction, while convict transportation left major penal sites now included in the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage property. Mining, forestry, farming and hydroelectric development later shaped towns and landscapes. The campaigns around Lake Pedder and the Franklin River also made Tasmania central to modern environmental politics. Aboriginal-led experiences and cultural institutions increasingly present these histories as living and contested, not confined to archaeology.
Hobart and Launceston are the principal air gateways, while the Spirit of Tasmania vehicle ferry arrives at Devonport from Victoria. Buses, coaches, tours and limited regional flights connect selected places, but a car or campervan remains the most flexible way to reach national parks and smaller communities. There are no regular passenger trains. Roads are generally good, although winding routes, winter ice and rapid weather changes can extend journey times. Accommodation ranges from city hotels and heritage stays to cabins, campsites and remote lodges, with limited capacity in popular park gateways making forward planning useful in peak walking and holiday periods.
