About Queensland.
Queensland occupies Australia’s north-east, stretching from Brisbane’s subtropical river region through tropical rainforest and islands to Cape York, then west across ranges, farming country and outback plains. Its long coastline brings the Great Barrier Reef close to several gateways, while the interior reveals a different state of cattle towns, fossil country, gorges and wide horizons. Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast form the populous south-east, but Cairns, Townsville and regional centres support journeys much farther north. The state’s defining feature is the meeting of reef, rainforest, city and outback across several climate zones.

The Great Barrier Reef supports island stays, snorkelling, diving and sailing along much of the coast, while the Wet Tropics and Daintree bring ancient rainforest to the Coral Sea. K’gari’s dunes, freshwater lakes and long beaches sit off the Fraser Coast, and the Whitsundays form another major island group farther north. Brisbane combines riverside precincts, galleries, performance and neighbourhood dining, while the Gold Coast adds surf beaches and a dense visitor infrastructure. Inland, Carnarvon Gorge, dinosaur landscapes around Winton and remote parks broaden a trip beyond the coastal route and reward travellers who allow for distance.
Queensland is home to many Aboriginal nations, and the Torres Strait Islands have their own distinct Islander peoples, cultures and maritime traditions. Cultural tours, art centres and Traditional Owner-managed places show that this heritage remains contemporary and locally specific. British colonisation brought violent frontier conflict, pastoral expansion, mining and the forced movement of Indigenous peoples. Sugar, ports and later migration also drew communities from the Pacific, Europe and Asia, influencing food, music and settlement along the coast. Today Brisbane’s cultural institutions and regional festivals sit alongside enduring language, art and land-management practices across Country and the Torres Strait.
Brisbane, Cairns and the Gold Coast are major air gateways, with regional flights reaching other coastal and inland centres. Rail and coach services follow selected corridors, and urban public transport is strongest in the south-east, while a car, campervan or organised tour gives greater flexibility elsewhere. Tropical northern travel is strongly shaped by wet and dry seasons, and cyclones, flooding or marine conditions can alter plans, while the south-east has a milder subtropical pattern. Accommodation ranges from city hotels and island resorts to farm stays, caravan parks and remote lodges, but sparsely serviced routes require earlier bookings and careful fuel planning.
