About New South Wales.
New South Wales stretches along Australia’s east coast from subtropical northern rivers to the Snowy Mountains, then west across farming country and semi-arid plains. Sydney provides its global image and principal gateway, but the state’s identity is equally shaped by regional cities, long beaches, sandstone plateaux, inland rivers and outback communities. A traveller can move from harbour ferries and contemporary galleries to rainforest, vineyards, alpine trails or desert Country within one jurisdiction. That breadth makes NSW best approached as several connected regions rather than as a city break with a few nearby excursions.

Sydney Harbour, the Opera House, coastal walks and surf beaches form a natural first chapter, while the Blue Mountains add cliffs, eucalypt valleys and walking tracks just inland. The Hunter Valley, Orange and Mudgee bring distinct wine and food landscapes, and the North and South coasts link beach towns with marine parks and national parks. Kosciuszko National Park offers alpine walking and winter snow, while Mungo National Park and Broken Hill open into deep cultural time, desert scenery and strong arts communities. Aboriginal-led experiences throughout the state connect these places through local stories rather than a single generic narrative.
Hundreds of Aboriginal nations and language groups hold enduring connections to the lands and waters now called New South Wales. Colonisation began at Sydney Cove in 1788, bringing dispossession, violence, convict transportation and pastoral expansion, while Aboriginal communities maintained culture and resisted removal. Gold, agriculture, industry and successive waves of migration later transformed towns and cities. Sydney became a Pacific-facing metropolis, but regional identities remained strong. Museums and historic sites illuminate parts of this history, while cultural tours, art centres and community-run experiences show that Aboriginal heritage is living, diverse and specific to Country.
Sydney Airport and the city’s rail, metro, bus, light rail and ferry networks support travel without a car in the metropolitan region. Intercity and regional trains, coaches and domestic flights reach many centres, but self-driving is often the most flexible option for coast, country and outback itineraries. Accommodation ranges from major hotels and hostels to farm stays, cabins, campgrounds and small-town motels. Climate varies from humid northern summers to alpine winters and dry inland heat, so one packing list does not fit the whole state. Regional distances and seasonal demand make a staged route more practical than repeated returns to Sydney.
