Faroe Islands

In Tórshavn, one of the world’s smallest capitals, the historic quarter of Tinganes gathers red wooden buildings and turf-roofed houses on a rocky headland between two harbours. The old town of Reyn adds narrow lanes and black-tarred homes, while cafés, restaurants, galleries and live music give the compact capital a lively contemporary culture.

Beyond the capital, hiking paths cross ridges and valleys to viewpoints over cliffs, sea stacks and neighbouring islands. Walks around Saksun, Gásadalur and Kalsoy reveal the archipelago’s changing moods, with birdlife and traditional traces of island life along the way. Roads, bridges, subsea tunnels, buses and ferries make it possible to range between many of the islands, although weather and local conditions always matter.

Faroese is the official language and a central part of local identity. Medieval ballads survive in the Faroese chain dance, a living tradition of singing, storytelling and movement, while modern music, design and food build on the same strong sense of place. Travel here is an encounter with a small, self-confident North Atlantic society where old traditions and modern life remain closely intertwined.
