UNESCO Heritage and Legendary Pastéis de Nata

The Historic Centre of Macau earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2005, protecting 22 monuments and eight public spaces across the city. The dramatic Ruins of St Paul's facade is the territory's most photographed sight, but the surrounding lanes offer plenty more: the fortress of Monte, the A-Ma Temple, the colourful Senate Square, and dozens of hidden oratories. Between sights, duck into a century-old bakery for an egg tart or pick up a bag of pork jerky — two Macanese institutions you will not find elsewhere.

Cotai, the Taipa Villages, and Coloane's Quiet Shores

Cross one of the three bridges to Taipa and the pace changes immediately. The Taipa Village area preserves rows of Portuguese-influenced shophouses painted in soft yellows and greens, now home to craft shops, dim sum restaurants, and small art galleries. Beyond lies Cotai — the strip of reclaimed land between Taipa and Coloane — where the territory's newest resort complexes concentrate. Further south, Coloane is noticeably quieter, offering beaches, hiking paths, and the calm of Hac Sa Village around a black-sand bay.

Getting There and Getting Around

Macau International Airport connects the territory to cities across mainland China, Taiwan, and South-East Asia. The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge, one of the longest sea-crossing structures in the world, provides a direct road link to Hong Kong and Zhuhai. Within the territory, the Macau Light Rapid Transit connects Taipa and Cotai, while free hotel shuttle buses, public buses, and a fleet of black taxis cover the rest. The compact size of the peninsula means many of its heritage sights are reachable on foot.
