Ancient Cities Built to Last Millennia
Sanaa is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth, its old city a UNESCO World Heritage Site packed with tower houses decorated in geometric white gypsum friezes that look like they have been iced rather than built. Shibam, in the Hadhramaut Valley, takes things further still with mudbrick high-rises rising sixteen storeys from the desert floor, earning the nickname the Manhattan of the Desert. These are cities that predate Islam, predate Christianity, and still hum with the everyday business of living.

Socotra Island: The Galapagos of the Arabian Sea
Socotra sits in the Arabian Sea with an ecosystem so isolated that a third of its plant species exist nowhere else on the planet. The dragon blood tree, with its umbrella canopy and crimson resin, has become one of the most photographed trees in the world. White sand beaches dissolve into turquoise shallows, sea turtles nest undisturbed along quiet shores, and the Soqotri people maintain a spoken tradition and a language that has no written form. It is the kind of place that rewards those who make the effort to reach it.
Landscapes That Run From Desert to Cloud Forest
Yemen sits at the meeting point of the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa, and its geography reflects that richness. The Haraz Mountains in the west rise above 3,600 metres, draped in terraced fields and ancient stone villages that cling to ridgelines above the clouds. The Tihama coastal plain stretches below in heat and humidity, home to a distinct Afro-Arab culture and architecture. Wadi Hadhramaut slices through the eastern desert like a great green canyon, fertile and improbable, lined with date palms and the mudbrick palaces of returned emigrants.
Coffee, Qat and a Cuisine All Its Own
Yemen is the original home of coffee, and Yemenis have been drinking it in one form or another since the fifteenth century. Qishr, a spiced coffee husk drink brewed with ginger, remains the everyday cup of choice across the highlands. Yemeni food is generous and aromatic: slow-cooked lamb in saltah, the national dish served bubbling in a stone pot; baked fish spiced with turmeric and fenugreek along the coast; and the layered honey pastry of bint al-sahn drizzled at the end of a meal. Hospitality here is not a gesture but a philosophy.
