St Peter Port and the Open Coast

The harbour town of St Peter Port tumbles down tiered hillsides to a marina bristling with yachts, its Victorian arcades and colourful waterfront giving way to the looming silhouette of Castle Cornet. Further afield, the island's southern cliffs drop dramatically to the sea, while sheltered northern bays offer rock-pooling, sand, and the kind of unhurried swim that feels like a proper holiday. Victor Hugo spent fifteen years here in exile, and his clifftop house Hauteville is now one of the island's most captivating museums.

Food, Flowers, and Famous Cattle

Guernsey's larder is the envy of the Channel Islands. The island's eponymous golden-hued cattle produce extraordinarily rich milk, the cream of which appears on almost every dessert worth ordering. Freshly landed crab, lobster, and ormer shellfish (a local delicacy protected by seasonal harvesting laws) fill menus across St Peter Port, while roadside stalls sell tomatoes, flowers, and fresh eggs on the honour system. The traditional bean jar slow-cooked overnight at a local bakery is as fine an introduction to island food culture as any.
