About Transnistria.
The Country That History Forgot to Finish
Squeezed between the Dniester River and the Ukrainian border, Transnistria is a de facto republic that declared independence from Moldova in 1990 and has been running its own show ever since. Soviet stars still gleam on government buildings, the currency features Suvorov on the notes and border guards stamp your passport with an ink that no other country recognises. For travellers who collect genuinely unusual experiences, this sliver of contested territory is one of the most thought provoking destinations in all of Europe.

Tiraspol on Two Wheels and a Budget
The capital, Tiraspol, is compact, flat and enormously cheap. Hire a bicycle and cruise Lenin Square, peer into the vast war memorial tank perched on its plinth near the river and then reward yourself at Sheriff Supermarket, the local retail empire that also happens to own the football club and a petrol station chain. Street food is hearty and generous, craft beer from Kvint Brewery is a revelation, and a full dinner for two rarely dents the wallet in any meaningful way.
Vineyards, Fortress Walls and the Sleepy City of Bender
Beyond the capital, Transnistria reveals a gentler side. The fortress town of Bender anchors the southern end of the territory with a 16th century Ottoman citadel whose battered ramparts offer sweeping views over the Dniester. Out in the countryside, sunflower fields stretch to the horizon and small agricultural villages keep rhythms unchanged for generations. The region sits at the northern edge of Moldovan wine country, so a bottle of something local and very inexpensive is never far away.
Practical Magic for the Curious Traveller
Entry is straightforward for most nationalities: cross the border from Moldova, register with a local host or hotel within 24 hours and keep your entry slip safe as you will need to show it on the way out. ATMs dispense Transnistrian rubles, Russian rubles and Moldovan lei depending on the machine, and Russian is the working language for most day to day interaction. The territory has no commercial airport, so arrivals fly into Chisinau and take a shared taxi or marshrutka the remaining 70 kilometres east.
