About Suriname.
The Rainforest Republic
More than ninety percent of Suriname is blanketed by primary Amazonian rainforest, making it one of the most forested countries on earth. Vast rivers cut south from the Atlantic coast into near-uncharted interior jungle, where Maroon and Amerindian communities have lived for centuries entirely on their own terms. The sheer scale of undisturbed wilderness here is staggering, and the wildlife to match: harpy eagles, giant river otters, tapirs, and black caiman all call this jungle home.

Paramaribo: Colonial Splendour on the Suriname River
The capital is a UNESCO World Heritage city of whitewashed Dutch colonial timber architecture, where a synagogue and a mosque stand on the same street corner in easy coexistence. Waterfront promenades line the Suriname River, market stalls overflow with roti, pom, and peanut soup, and the city hums with the kind of layered cultural energy that comes from East Indian, Javanese, Creole, Maroon, and Chinese communities living side by side for generations.
Rivers, Reserves, and the Interior
The Central Suriname Nature Reserve covers nearly one-and-a-half million hectares of untouched tropical forest and is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. River journeys by dugout canoe into the interior reveal waterfalls, granite outcrops rising dramatically from the jungle canopy, and remote Saramaccan and Ndyuka villages where visitors are welcomed with a generosity that stays long in the memory. Brownsberg Nature Park, just a few hours from Paramaribo, offers accessible highland trails above the vast Brokopondo Reservoir.
A Kitchen Unlike Any Other in South America
Surinamese food is one of the continent's great undiscovered pleasures, drawing on Dutch, West African, Indian, Javanese, and Chinese influences with no single tradition dominating. Roti with curried potato and chicken, baka bana fried plantain, Javanese noodle broth, and fresh-caught river fish grilled over charcoal are all daily staples. The diversity of flavours on offer in even a modest street market in Paramaribo reflects just how richly multicultural this country genuinely is.
