The Cradle of Humankind

Straddling the border with Gauteng, the Cradle of Humankind UNESCO World Heritage Site contains some of the most important fossil deposits on the planet, including the caves of Sterkfontein where many of the earliest known hominid remains have been uncovered. The Maropeng visitor centre translates millions of years of human evolution into something approachable and genuinely fascinating, with underground boat rides through geological time and galleries that handle the science without sacrificing the wonder. It is a half-day from Johannesburg and a full universe away from it.

Platinum Heartland and Cultural Heritage

North West sits over one of the richest platinum and chrome deposits anywhere in the world, and the industrial towns of Rustenburg and Klerksdorp carry that weight visibly. Away from the mining belt, the landscape opens into sweeping grasslands and cattle country, and the Tswana cultural heritage of Mahikeng gives the provincial capital a distinct character.
