About Mpumalanga.
Where the Sun Rises First
Mpumalanga, whose name means 'the place where the sun rises' in isiZulu and Siswati, sits in the north-east corner of South Africa and delivers on that promise with drama every single morning. The province stretches from the highveld plateau down a spectacular escarpment to the lowveld bushveld, creating a sweep of landscapes that shifts from cool misty highlands to warm, wildlife-rich savanna within a short drive. It is a province of genuinely staggering contrasts, and those contrasts are what make it unforgettable.

Kruger and the Lowveld
The western reaches of Kruger National Park lie within Mpumalanga, giving travellers some of the most accessible wildlife viewing in southern Africa. Lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos and buffaloes share vast tracts of open savanna with hundreds of bird species and a supporting cast of antelope that seems to go on forever. Private game lodges clustered along the park's borders offer a more intimate experience, with guided night drives and bush walks that bring you up close with the lowveld in ways a self-drive safari simply cannot.
The Panorama Route and Blyde River Canyon
The Panorama Route along the escarpment edge is one of South Africa's great scenic drives, threading past waterfalls, viewpoints and geological oddities that reward every stop. The Blyde River Canyon is the centrepiece: a vast, green-walled gorge carved through red sandstone, studded with the iconic Three Rondavels and the swirling potholes of Bourke's Luck. Pilgrim's Rest, a preserved gold rush village nearby, adds a layer of history to the journey, its corrugated iron buildings and narrow streets telling stories of fortune seekers from the 1870s.
Towns, Trails and Local Flavour
Mbombela, the provincial capital, is a relaxed and increasingly confident city with good restaurants, lively markets and a famous football stadium whose giraffe-patterned roof columns have become a landmark in their own right. The surrounding region produces an abundance of subtropical fruit, with roadside stalls offering mangoes, avocados and macadamia nuts at prices that feel almost implausibly generous. For hikers and mountain bikers, the escarpment forests and the Barberton Makhonjwa Geopark, protecting some of the oldest rock formations on Earth, provide trails that mix natural wonder with deep geological time.
