Nomadic Heart, Urban Pulse

Hargeisa, the capital, buzzes with energy: its central market overflows with frankincense, myrrh and brightly patterned textiles, while new cafes and restaurants line its dusty boulevards. Camel caravans still cross the plateau country beyond the city, following routes that predate recorded history. Burao's legendary livestock market draws traders from across the Horn, with thousands of goats, sheep and camels changing hands under the open sky each day. The rhythm of pastoral life and the hum of growing cities exist side by side here in a way that few places on earth can match.

Mountains, Desert and Sea

The Golis Range rises sharply from the coastal plain, its peaks reaching over 2,000 metres and catching moisture from the Gulf of Aden to feed pockets of juniper forest and green valleys. Below, the Guban coastal strip shimmers in the heat for much of the year before brief rains transform it into a carpet of wildflowers and fresh grazing. Further east, the Sanaag highlands give way to dramatic escarpments and hidden wadis where wildlife including the Speke's gazelle roams freely. Every turn in the terrain reveals a different face of a remarkably varied landscape.

Frankincense, Tea and Welcome

Somaliland sits at the heart of the ancient frankincense trade, and the aromatic resin still flows from the gnarled trees of the Cal Madow mountains to markets around the world. Hospitality runs deep here: a visitor can expect endless cups of sweet spiced tea, shared meals of rice, goat and fragrant anjero flatbread, and the warm curiosity of people proud of their homeland. Poetry is not a pastime but a pillar of culture, and Somalis are often described as a nation of poets where spoken verse carries the weight of law, history and love. Somaliland offers the rare thrill of discovery in a part of the world that few travellers have yet to explore.
