About the Solomon Islands.
A Pacific Archipelago Steeped in History
Scattered across the southwestern Pacific, the Solomon Islands is an archipelago of nearly 1,000 islands stretching east of Papua New Guinea. This sovereign nation carries extraordinary historical weight -- Guadalcanal, the largest island, was the site of one of the Second World War's most pivotal Pacific campaigns, and the echoes of that history are woven into the landscape from rusting relics to solemn memorials. Beyond the history, the islands offer a tapestry of Melanesian culture, with over 70 living languages spoken across nine provinces and a tradition of communal village life that has endured for thousands of years.

Underwater Worlds of Extraordinary Richness
The Solomon Islands sits within the Coral Triangle, the global centre of marine biodiversity, and divers come from across the world to explore its waters. Pristine coral gardens, WWII shipwrecks draped in soft corals, reef walls plunging into the deep blue, and an abundance of pelagic species make this one of the Pacific's most rewarding diving destinations. The Iron Bottom Sound, named for the dozens of ships and aircraft sunk during the Guadalcanal campaign, offers a hauntingly beautiful combination of natural and historical diving that is unlike anywhere else on the planet.
Rainforests, Lagoons and Remote Island Life
Above the waterline, the Solomon Islands rewards the intrepid traveller with dense tropical rainforests, traditional villages, and some of the most remote island scenery in Oceania. The Western Province is celebrated for its spectacular lagoons and stilt villages, while Malaita offers genuine cultural immersion with artificial islands built from coral and communities that have maintained their customs for generations. Travel here is an adventure -- roads are limited, boats are common transport, and the warmth of Solomon Islander hospitality fills the gaps that infrastructure leaves open.
Getting There and Getting Around
Honiara International Airport on Guadalcanal is the main gateway, with connections to Australia, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu via Solomon Airlines and a small number of international carriers. Once in the islands, domestic flights and inter-island ferries connect the major provinces, though schedules can be flexible by Pacific standards. The capital, Honiara, serves as the hub for onward travel, with accommodation ranging from simple guesthouses to comfortable hotels for those who prefer a base before venturing further afield.
