About Senegal.
Gateway to West Africa
Senegal sits at the westernmost tip of the African continent, where the Sahara softens into savannah and the Atlantic rolls in long and warm. It is one of the most stable and welcoming countries on the continent, and its capital Dakar pulses with creative energy: galleries spilling onto pavements, fish markets roaring at dawn, and djembe rhythms threading through the heat of the afternoon. First-time visitors to sub-Saharan Africa routinely find Senegal disarms every expectation.

Teranga: Hospitality as a Way of Life
Teranga is the Wolof word for hospitality, and in Senegal it operates less as a social nicety and more as a foundational value. Strangers are fed before they are questioned, tea ceremonies stretch for an hour and cover three rounds, and neighbours move through each other’s homes as freely as their own. Travelling here means being drawn, gently and repeatedly, into the daily life of people who take genuine pleasure in sharing it.
Landscapes from Desert Edge to Jungle Fringe
The north is Sahel country: ancient baobabs, flat golden scrubland, and the sacred city of Touba rising improbably from the dust. Head south past the Siné-Saloum delta, a labyrinth of mangrove channels and tidal islands where pelicans roost and pirogues drift without urgency. Further south still, the Casamance region feels like a different country altogether: lush and forested, carved by rivers, punctuated by rice paddies and the quiet rhythms of Jola village life.
Music, Art, and the Atlantic Shore
Senegal has produced some of the most celebrated musicians, artists, and writers in the African world, and that creative current runs visibly through everyday life. Dakar’s Ngor and Yoff beaches draw surfers and sunset swimmers in equal measure, while the nearby island of Gorée carries the weight of Atlantic history in its ochre colonial buildings and the infamous Maison des Esclaves. Further up the coast, the fishing village of Saint-Louis has a crumbling, photogenic grandeur and a jazz festival that draws crowds from across the continent each spring.
