Rhythm and Flavour

The soul of Saint Lucia beats to the rhythm of soca, zouk and calypso, with the annual Carnival painting the streets of Castries in feathers and sequins. Kwéyòl, the island's French Creole language, lends a melodic warmth to everyday life and spills into the food: think green fig and saltfish for breakfast, fresh bouyon for lunch, and cocoa tea to finish the evening. Two centuries of tug between France and Britain left behind a culture that is neither one nor the other, but entirely its own.

Seaside Adventures

The waters around Saint Lucia are as inviting as the hillsides. Snorkellers glide over coral gardens at Anse Chastanet, while divers explore underwater pinnacles teeming with parrotfish, seahorses and spotted moray eels. Sailing between the Pitons on a catamaran is practically a rite of passage, and Friday night fish fry at Anse La Raye draws locals and visitors alike to tables piled with lobster, lambi and cold Piton beer.

Towns and Trails

Beyond the beaches, the interior hides trails through dense tropical forest where you might spot the Saint Lucia parrot, a vivid emerald and blue bird found nowhere else on earth. The capital, Castries, hums with market energy, while the old colonial streets of Soufrière offer a quieter pace. From the northern buzz of Rodney Bay to the untouched south, Saint Lucia packs a remarkable amount of character into 617 square kilometres.
