About Paraguay.
The Heart of South America
Landlocked between Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil, Paraguay is South America's overlooked interior — a country of enormous rivers, sweeping wetlands, and a national identity fiercely shaped by the Guaraní language spoken by nearly all its people. The Paraguay River cleaves the country in two: to the east, the lush populated heartland; to the west, the vast, wildlife-rich Chaco, one of the continent's last great wilderness frontiers. Asunción, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the Americas, sits on the river's eastern bank with a relaxed, unhurried energy that rewards those willing to slow down.

Jesuit Missions and Colonial History
Paraguay's most dramatic historical legacy lies in its Jesuit missions, the Reducciones, where 17th and 18th century Jesuit priests and Guaraní communities built remarkable stone cities in the subtropical forest. The ruins of Trinidad and Jesús de Tavarangue are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, their carved sandstone facades and amphitheatre foundations still standing amid encroaching jungle. These sites tell a story of cultural encounter, music, architecture, and ultimately expulsion, that shaped the character of the entire region.
Rivers, Wetlands, and the Chaco
The Pantanal's southern reaches spill into Paraguay's northeast, creating a patchwork of flooded grasslands, oxbow lakes, and gallery forest teeming with capybara, giant anteaters, jabiru storks, and the occasional jaguar. The Gran Chaco, covering the country's western half, is drier but equally alive: thorn forest, salt lakes, and extraordinary birdlife attract serious naturalists prepared to venture off sealed roads. The Río Paraguay and Río Paraná define the country's borders and offer river journeys through scenery that feels genuinely remote.
Culture, Food, and Everyday Life
Paraguayan life moves to the rhythm of tereré, cold herbal mate sipped communally through a metal straw, and the sound of polka paraguaya, the accordion-driven folk music heard at street parties and festivals alike. Street food runs to chipa, dense cheese bread baked in clay ovens, and sopa paraguaya, a surprisingly solid cornbread eaten at every family table. The country's bilingualism runs deep: conversations drift fluidly between Spanish and Guaraní, and the warmth extended to visitors is immediate and genuine.
