A Coast With Thousands of Years of Memory
Gaza is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, a Mediterranean port that has served as a crossroads of trade and culture since the Bronze Age. Philistines, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans have all left their mark on a city that refuses to be reduced to any single chapter of its story. The ancient harbour, the Great Mosque built over a Crusader cathedral, and the layered ruins beneath the modern streets speak to a depth of human presence that is genuinely rare anywhere on earth.

A Kitchen Shaped by Sea and Land
Gazan cooking draws on the Mediterranean coast with a distinct spice profile that sets it apart from other Palestinian traditions. Sumagiyya, a slow braised lamb dish with chard and sumac served over flatbread, is considered a hallmark of Gazan hospitality. Fresh seafood from the Mediterranean, seasoned with dill and cumin and cooked over charcoal, is another defining flavour of the territory. The food here is bold, specific, and inseparable from the identity of the people who make it.
Craft Traditions by the Sea
Gaza has long been known for its woven textiles, with a distinct tradition of producing colourful rugs and fabrics that differ from the embroidery traditions of the West Bank. Pottery workshops in the old city quarter produce hand thrown and hand painted ceramics in styles that draw on centuries of local craft knowledge. These traditions are kept alive by artisans who see the work as an act of cultural continuity, making every piece something more than a souvenir.
The Mediterranean Edge of Palestine
Gaza's coastline stretches for roughly 40 kilometres along the eastern Mediterranean, a flat and sandy shore that has shaped the territory's economy, diet, and character for millennia. The fertile agricultural land behind the coast has historically produced strawberries, citrus, and flowers exported across the region. The landscape is compact and distinct from the hills of the West Bank, giving Gaza a geography and a pace that is entirely its own.
