About Palau.
A Living Ocean, Right Beneath Your Feet
Palau is one of the most extraordinary diving destinations on Earth, and the numbers are staggering: over 1,300 species of fish and 700 species of coral thriving inside a barrier reef lagoon that stretches for 70 miles. The Rock Islands Southern Lagoon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, punctuates this landscape with hundreds of jungle-topped limestone islets that seem to float on the surface. Snorkellers and divers arrive from every continent to drift through Blue Corner, explore the WWII wrecks off Peleliu, or glide alongside harmless jellyfish in the famous Jellyfish Lake on Eil Malk Island.

Micronesia's Smallest and Most Storied Capital
Ngerulmud holds the distinction of being the world's least populous national capital, a quiet government complex on the vast and largely undeveloped island of Babeldaob. The real heartbeat of Palau is Koror, connected to Babeldaob by bridge and home to the country's restaurants, dive operators, guesthouses, and the Belau National Museum, which traces Palauan culture from the matrilineal clan system right through to independence in 1994. The traditional meeting house, the bai, remains a living institution in village life across the archipelago.
Conservation at the Heart of Everything
Palau has long led the Pacific in marine protection. In 2009 it established the world's first shark sanctuary, banning commercial shark fishing entirely, and in 2015 it created the Palau National Marine Sanctuary, closing 80 percent of its exclusive economic zone to fishing. Every visitor to Palau must sign the Palau Pledge: a promise stamped into their passport to act in an environmentally and culturally responsible way. It is a small but powerful gesture that reflects an entire nation's relationship with the sea.
Island Life Beyond the Reef
Beyond diving, Palau rewards those who slow down: kayaking through mangrove channels, watching fruit bats spiral at dusk over Koror, exploring WWII relics on Peleliu and Angaur, or simply sharing a meal of fresh tuna and taro at a family-run eatery. The country runs on US dollars and operates firmly in the US cultural sphere, making logistics straightforward for visitors from across the Pacific. Flights connect through Guam, Manila, Taipei, and Tokyo, placing this remote paradise within reach of the entire Asia-Pacific region.
