About Niger.
Where the Sahara Meets the Sahel
Niger is one of Africa's great unsung frontiers. Covering nearly 1.27 million square kilometres, the country stretches from the ochre dunes of the Sahara in the north to the lush riverbanks of the Niger River in the south. The transition between these two worlds, across the scrubland and acacia plains of the Sahel, plays out with a drama that rewards anyone willing to make the journey. Vast, quiet, and genuinely off the beaten track, Niger offers a raw encounter with landscape on an almost incomprehensible scale.

Agadez and the Ancient Caravan Routes
The UNESCO World Heritage city of Agadez sits at the edge of the Sahara and was once the most important crossroads of the trans-Saharan trade. Its soaring mud brick mosque, the Agadez Grand Mosque, remains the defining landmark of a city that has drawn merchants, scholars, and Tuareg nomads for centuries. The surrounding Air Mountains and the extraordinary lunar landscape of the Tenere Desert beyond them offer some of the most otherworldly terrain on the continent. Camel treks into the dunes, visits to the ancient city walls, and encounters with Tuareg silversmithing traditions make Agadez a place that lingers long in the memory.
Niamey on the River
Niger's capital sits on the banks of the Niger River, a wide and languid presence that anchors the city's southwestern corner. Niamey has an energy that belies its modest size, with riverside promenades, lively markets, and the Grand Marche at its commercial heart. The National Museum of Niger is a standout, housing one of the most complete dinosaur skeletons ever discovered anywhere in the world alongside ethnographic displays and a wonderful living zoo of local wildlife. In the evenings the river glows gold, and the griot music drifting out from riverside bars makes it easy to linger far longer than planned.
The People and the Mosaic of Cultures
Niger is home to one of West Africa's richest tapestries of peoples. The Hausa, Zarma, Tuareg, Fulani, Kanuri, and Toubou communities each bring their own languages, crafts, music, and traditions to a country that has always been a meeting point of cultures. The weekly markets of Zinder, with its atmospheric old city and sultanate history, and the cattle markets of Tahoua, where Tuareg and Fulani herders converge from across the Sahel, give a vivid sense of how vigorously these traditions continue. For the adventurous traveller willing to go slowly and engage, Niger offers encounters that feel genuinely untouched by mass tourism.
