Colonial Charm

Granada and León compete for the title of Nicaragua's most photogenic city, and both make a strong case. Granada sits at the foot of Volcán Mombacho on the shores of Lago de Nicaragua, its streets lined with painted facades and horse drawn carriages. León leans a little more bohemian, its cathedral (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) anchoring a university town full of murals, galleries and a thriving street food scene. Between the two, Masaya's artisan market and Masaya Volcano's glowing lava lake offer a detour that few travellers skip.

Caribbean Soul

The Caribbean coast is a world apart. Afro Caribbean and indigenous Miskito, Mayangna, Rama and Garifuna communities give this side of the country a completely different rhythm, cuisine and soundtrack. Bluefields and the Corn Islands reward those willing to make the journey with turquoise water, reggae and coconut flavoured seafood. English Creole is the everyday language here alongside Spanish, and the pace of life runs on island time regardless of what the calendar says.

Adventure Without the Crowds

Nicaragua remains one of Central America's least visited countries, which means emptier surf breaks, uncrowded trails and genuinely warm welcomes. Volcano boarding on Cerro Negro, kayaking through the Isletas de Granada and hiking the misty trails of Selva Negra are all possible without booking months in advance. The country punches well above its weight for adventure and affordability, and it rarely asks you to queue for either.
