Aitutaki and the Art of the Lagoon

Aitutaki's lagoon is one of the most celebrated in the world, a vast turquoise shallow ringed by motus and coral heads that glow gold at dusk. Snorkellers drift over brain coral and neon fish, while lagoon cruises deliver guests to One Foot Island for fresh coconuts and a postmark in a paradise. Back on the main island, the pace hums along at the tempo of a ukulele, with small family guesthouses and open-air restaurants serving fresh fish straight off the reef.

Culture, Marae and the Maori Spirit

Cook Islands Māori culture is vibrant and living, not preserved under glass. Marae stone temples dot the outer islands, the traditional story of Te Reo rings out in song and dance, and the Te Maeva Nui festival each August turns Rarotonga into a celebration of tribal craft, costume, and performance. The island of Atiu, nicknamed Nukuroa (the great land), draws curious travellers into lava tube caves and coffee plantations, with guides who are as likely to be related to the village chief as to the Cook Islands' own diaspora in Auckland.

Where to Go and How to Explore

Fly into Rarotonga and take to a scooter or bike to circle the island road in under two hours, stopping at the Muri lagoon for a kayak, or hiking inland on the Cross-Island Track to the Needle rock spire. From Rarotonga, Air Rarotonga connects the outer islands in small twin-props, opening up Mangaia's raised coral makatea terraces, Penrhyn's remote lagoon atoll in the northern group, and the quiet gardens of Mauke and Mitiaro. The Cook Islands rewards those who linger: every island reveals a different mood.
