A Coastline Worth Every Kilometre
Stretching 2,500 kilometres along the Indian Ocean, Mozambique's coast is a parade of powder-white beaches, coral archipelagos, and warm sapphire water. The Bazaruto Archipelago floats offshore like a mirage, its sand dunes tumbling into shallow turquoise lagoons patrolled by dugongs and manta rays. Tofo Beach draws divers from across the globe to swim alongside whale sharks in the warm Mozambique Channel, while the secluded shores of the Quirimbas stretch north toward Tanzania in a barely interrupted ribbon of paradise.

Ilha de Mocambique and the Spice of History
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ilha de Mocambique is one of Africa's most beguiling time capsules. The tiny coral island was the first capital of Portuguese East Africa and carries that layered past in every stone fort, whitewashed chapel, and Swahili arcade. Arab dhow traders, Portuguese navigators, and local Makua culture left their fingerprints in the architecture and cuisine, producing a flavour utterly unlike anywhere else on the continent. Walking its narrow lanes at dusk, with the calls of fishermen drifting over the water, is a quietly unforgettable experience.
Wildlife and Wilderness in the Interior
Beyond the coast, Mozambique's interior unfolds into vast wilderness. The Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park links Mozambique's Limpopo National Park with South Africa's Kruger, creating one of the world's largest conservation areas where elephants roam freely across former borders. Niassa Reserve in the far north is among Africa's largest protected areas, a remote expanse of miombo woodland teeming with lions, wild dogs, and sable antelope. Gorongosa National Park, reborn after decades of civil war, stands as one of conservation's great success stories, with hippo-filled rivers, baobab plains, and extraordinary birdlife rewarding those who make the journey inland.
Maputo and the Rhythm of the Capital
Maputo is a capital city with character to spare. Broad avenues lined with flame trees and bougainvillea give way to a buzzing waterfront, a scattering of Art Deco architecture from the colonial era, and a food scene that fuses Portuguese, Indian, and Mozambican tradition into something gloriously its own. The Mercado Central overflows with spice, fresh prawns, and carved wooden curios. Bars in the Polana district pulse with marrabenta music late into the night. From Maputo you can reach empty beaches, border crossings into South Africa or Swaziland, or the offshore islands, all within a few hours, making the city a lively and practical base for any Mozambican adventure.
