The desert has range

The Adrar Plateau is where Mauritania shows off its geological party tricks. Towering sand dunes give way to deep canyons and flat-topped mesas, while the Richat Structure, a 50-kilometre-wide bullseye of concentric rock rings visible from space, sits in the landscape like the planet forgot to explain itself. Terjit Oasis hides in a red-rock canyon with palm trees, natural pools, and thermal springs, offering a surreal contrast to the surrounding emptiness. Camel treks across the Erg Ouarane and nights spent camping under a sky undimmed by light pollution round out a desert experience that feels genuinely far from everywhere.

Where the Sahara meets the Atlantic

Banc d'Arguin National Park stretches along the Atlantic coast in a sprawl of tidal flats, shallow lagoons, and sandy islands that host one of the most important concentrations of migratory birds in the world. Flamingos, pelicans, and spoonbills gather in staggering numbers between November and March, while the Imraguen fishing communities work the waters using traditional sailing techniques passed down through generations. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the few places on earth where the Sahara Desert simply walks into the ocean. Further north, the port city of Nouadhibou sits on a peninsula and serves as the starting point for the legendary iron ore train, a two-kilometre-long freight train that accepts adventurous passengers for the ride through the desert to the mining town of Zouerate.

Tea, fish, and a capital on the coast

Nouakchott began as a small village and became a capital almost overnight when Mauritania gained independence in 1960. Today it is a sprawling, sandy city where the Port de Pêche fish market erupts each afternoon as hundreds of painted pirogues land their catch on the beach. Mauritanian cuisine leans on fresh fish, rice, dates, and camel milk, while the country's tea ritual, a three-round ceremony of increasingly sweet mint tea, is less a drink and more a social institution. The city's National Museum houses artefacts spanning Mauritania's layers of Berber, Arab, and West African heritage, a reminder that this is a country where the Sahel, the Sahara, and the Atlantic have been trading influences for millennia.
