Destination overview
Malta is a compact Mediterranean country whose archipelago includes Malta, Gozo and Comino. Limestone landscapes, harbours and clear waters frame a destination where prehistoric temples, fortified towns and village life sit close together.
With more than 7,000 years of history, the islands bear traces of the Phoenicians, Romans, Knights of St John, Napoleon and the British Empire. Valletta, Mdina and the Three Cities bring that layered past into streets, churches, palaces and fortifications.
Maltese and English are official languages, and Maltese Sign Language is also official. Visitors can experience local food, village festas, museums and historic sites, alongside swimming, walking, diving and boat trips. Gozo offers a greener, more tranquil character, while largely uninhabited Comino is popular for day trips and hiking.
Malta's small scale makes it suited to combining cultural visits with time by the sea. Ferries connect the main islands, public buses serve the principal settlements, and visitors drive on the left. The euro is the official currency.
