Where the Sahara Meets the Niger
Mali is a country of staggering contrasts, where the golden sands of the Sahara drift southward to meet the life-giving curves of the Niger River. The river is the spine of the nation, threading through ancient trading cities, flooding fertile plains, and carrying the dugout pirogues of fishermen who have worked these waters for centuries. The landscapes shift from scrubby Sahel savannah to the ochre moonscapes of the Adrar des Ifoghas mountains, every horizon more dramatic than the last.

Timbuktu and the Mud-Brick Wonders
Few place names carry as much mythic weight as Timbuktu, the fabled city that once sat at the crossroads of trans-Saharan trade routes and sheltered one of the greatest collections of Islamic manuscripts in the world. The Djingareyber, Sankore, and Sidi Yahia mosques rise from the desert in extraordinary mud-brick grandeur, their organic towers looking as though the earth itself decided to reach skyward. Djenne, another UNESCO-listed city, is home to the Great Mosque of Djenne, rebuilt in its current form in 1907 and repaired each year by the entire community in a joyful festival of plastering.
Dogon Country and the Cliffs of Bandiagara
The Bandiagara Escarpment is one of West Africa's most astonishing landscapes, a 150 kilometre sandstone cliff face dotted with Dogon villages that cling to the rock like swallow nests. The Dogon people are renowned for their intricate cosmological traditions, their elaborate carved wooden masks, and a culture so distinct from its neighbours that researchers have spent careers attempting to decode it. Trekking between villages along the cliff face, staying with local families, and watching the sun sink behind the plateau is an experience that belongs on any traveller's shortlist.
Music, Markets, and the Spirit of West Africa
Mali punches far above its weight in world music, having produced legends including Ali Farka Toure, Salif Keita, and Toumani Diabate, whose kora playing has enchanted audiences from Bamako to Berlin. The capital's Grand Marche is a riot of colour and commerce, stacked with hand-dyed bogolan cloth, silver Tuareg jewellery, and mounds of spices that perfume the whole neighbourhood. Evening brings the sound of balafon and ngoni drifting from open-air restaurants where grilled capitaine fish and tigadegena peanut stew make a meal worth travelling for on their own.
